How a phone body scan works
A phone can’t see inside your body. These apps look at your outside shape, from photos, a silhouette or a depth sensor, and estimate the rest from that shape plus details you enter, such as height, weight, age and sex.
They take different routes. MeThreeSixty reads your silhouette from two poses. Bodymapp uses the Face ID depth sensor and doesn’t take ordinary photos. Spren works from one full-body selfie. Pip Body Scan takes four guided photos, then makes a 3D model you can turn and zoom.
What the numbers can and can’t tell you
Body-fat and measurement figures from a phone are estimates. Clothing, lighting, pose, posture, a big meal or a day of water retention can all move them. Two apps can give you two different numbers for the same body on the same day.
The useful signal is the trend in your own scans, taken the same way each time. Don’t compare one app’s number with another’s, or with a lab result.
Some companies publish research on their methods: Spren and MeThreeSixty link to papers, and Bodymapp’s FAQ quotes its own error margins. Pip Body Scan hasn’t been independently tested. Its body-fat and waist figures are AI estimates, not medical measurements, and it doesn’t measure muscle, visceral fat, metabolic age or BMI.
How to get a fair comparison
Whichever app you use, keep the setup boring and the same each time.
- Scan in the same spot, in the same light.
- Wear the same fitted clothes, with long hair tied up.
- Scan at a similar time of day, before a big meal.
- Hold the pose the app asks for, with arms away from your body.
- Look at change across several weeks, not one scan.
What Pip Body Scan doesn’t do
Compared with the other scanners here, Pip Body Scan has clear gaps.
- It gives no muscle mass, BMI, visceral fat or metabolic age. Waist is the only circumference.
- You can scan once a week.
- Your four photos are processed in the cloud by OpenAI and Meshy, after you agree. Meshy’s copy is deleted once your 3D body is saved on your iPhone.
- There’s no free tier. Results stay frosted until you join.
- It’s iPhone only.
Which one fits you?
- MeThreeSixty
- You want a free scanner with lots of measurements, on iPhone or Android, with images kept on the phone.
- ZOZOFIT
- You want detailed measurements of key areas, posture checks and a free plan, with the option of a scanning suit.
- Bodymapp
- You have a Face ID iPhone and want muscle mass and up to 20 metrics from the depth sensor.
- Spren
- Body-fat detail matters most to you, including fat distribution and resting metabolic rate.
- trackBod
- You want a quick front-and-side photo analysis and don’t need a 3D model.
- Pip Body Scan
- You’re on GLP-1s or peptides and want a weekly 3D body next to your shots, symptoms and meals.
Questions people ask.
Are body scan apps accurate?
They give estimates, and the setup changes the result. Use them to follow your own trend over weeks, scanned the same way each time. They aren’t a substitute for a medical measurement.
Do body scan apps upload my photos?
It varies. MeThreeSixty says images are processed on the phone and not stored. Bodymapp says it takes no photos and uploads a depth heat map. Spren says data is processed in the cloud. Pip Body Scan sends your four photos to OpenAI and Meshy to make your scan, only after you agree, and keeps your record on your iPhone.
Does Pip Body Scan measure muscle?
No. It shows a fat-free mass range, which isn’t the same as muscle. It doesn’t show BMI, visceral fat or metabolic age either.
