Why progress photos are hard to compare
A photo shows one angle in one light. Stand a little closer, turn a few degrees or change the lamp, and the difference between two photos can be bigger than the change in your body.
That’s why the good photo apps help you line up each shot, with a grid, a ghost of the last photo or auto-alignment. If you want photos, pick an app that does this.
How Pip Body Scan’s 3D comparison differs
Pip Body Scan takes four photos, front, both sides and back, and makes a 3D model of your body from them. Because it’s a model, you can turn two check-ins to the same angle and look at them together.
In Body Story, “Since start” and “Last check-in” sit side by side. Drag one and both turn together. You can also compare any two check-ins in Compare, Overlay or Changes mode, with a before-and-now slider.
Pip Body Scan also checks each photo as you take it, and asks for a retake if you’re cut off, too far away, tilted, or the light is too dark or bright.
When a photo app is the better choice
Pip Body Scan isn’t the right tool for every kind of progress photo.
- You want a photo every day. Pip Body Scan allows one scan a week.
- You want photos that never leave your phone. Pip Body Scan sends scan photos to OpenAI and Meshy to make your 3D body, after you agree.
- You want something free. Pip Body Scan’s results need a membership.
- You’re on Android. Pip Body Scan is iPhone only.
- You want a time-lapse of your face. Selfie A Day is built for that.

Questions people ask.
How often should I take progress photos?
Often enough to see a trend, but not so often that daily swings take over. Pip Body Scan allows one scan a week, so each one shows a real week of change. Whatever app you use, keep the setup the same.
Is a 3D scan better than progress photos?
Not better, different. Photos are quick, free in many apps and can stay on your phone. A 3D body lets you turn two check-ins to the same angle, but it’s an estimate of your shape, made once a week.
Do progress photo apps keep my photos private?
Body Tracker and Morph say photos stay on your device with no account. Progress stores them on your device or iCloud. Pip Body Scan stores your record on your iPhone and sends scan photos to OpenAI and Meshy only after you agree.
